Rice Terrace Fields in Mu Cang Chai, Vietnam

Rice Terrace Fields in Mu Cang Chai, Vietnam

Geography: Mu Cang Chai is a district of Yen Bai province, about some 300 km north of Ha Noi, in the northeastern region of Vietnam. The place is home to the H'Mong and Thai community.

Main attraction: For the place being about 1000 meters above sea level, the steep hills make it almost impossible to grow rice fields like those in the delta. Thus local residences grow their own rice on the terraced fields, for the purpose of preventing water from flowing downhill. These terraced fields lying among rugged green moutain valleys, under clear blue sky or a mysterious and crips fog, bring to eyes an imposing scenery. During harvesting season, ready crops transitioned to yellow, while new crops still remain in their green color. The scenery is a big attraction to photographer and trekkers.
Best season to visit:  September to early October, this is the harvesting season.

Other north attraction
Dien Bien Phu: Dien Bien Phu is well known as the site of Vietnamese historic victory against the French colonial force. Located in the Dien Bien province, about 500 km west of Hanoi city, it is a historical relic complex consisting of many famous sites such as Him Lam Hill, Muong Thanh Bridge, Exhibition Museum, Dien Bien Phu Cemetery, A1 Hill, C1 Hill, etc, which still bears the scars of the wars reminding Vietnamese people of the decisive battle in the past. Probably two biggest attractions among heaps of sites are A1 Hill and Dien Bien Phu Museum.

Cuc Phuong National Park: The park possess the huge wildlife diversity but it also contains numerous beautiful caves that are of great value in archeology. Typical examples are a fossil of a sea reptile dating at 200 - 230 million years old and evidences of prehistoric human living in the forest about 7500 years ago found in caves. Such vestiges make the park become one of the oldest sites of human habitation in Vietnam.
From April to June, the park becomes hot, wet and muddy, and from July to October is the rainy season bringing lots of leeches. Therefore, the best time to pay a visit is during the dry season, from November to February
